Winter Training Experience in Nancy, France: A Motivation to Learn French

The Winter Training in Nancy, held from November 30 to December 14, 2024, was an extraordinary experience for me as a French language teacher. Organized by Cours D’Été Nancy, the program offered language learning and an introduction to French history, civilization, and culture, particularly in the region of Nancy.

I had the privilege of attending this program as a mentor alongside Fatthyyah Azzahra, a Mutiara Harapan High School student. Fatthyyah earned this opportunity after winning the French language competition organized by the Institut Français d’Indonésie (IFI) and sponsored by IFI. I would like to express my gratitude to IFI for providing this incredible opportunity to Fatthyyah and other winners from Indonesia. Additionally, I am deeply thankful to the Mutiara Harapan Wiratama Foundation (YMHW) for supporting our journey to France.

During my time in Paris, I also had the fantastic chance to meet Jefferson, an alumnus of Mutiara Harapan High School, who has successfully pursued his studies and career in France. This meeting was a proud and inspiring moment, showcasing the potential of our students to excel on an international stage.

Over two weeks, we attended intensive French language courses for three hours every weekday. Because these courses were adapted to the participants’ language proficiency, they offered a useful way to improve French language skills. In addition, various cultural events were held on weekends and in the afternoons, including trips to the lively Saint-Nicolas festival, local markets, art museums, Jeanne d’Arc’s home and other activities. These experiences enhanced our language proficiency and broadened our understanding of French life and culture.

Why Take French Classes?

This experience strengthened my belief that learning French or any foreign language is an invaluable skill for the future. Because of the language, we can connect with people throughout the world, which opens chances for us to live, work, or study overseas. Proficiency in a foreign language is an enormous advantage in a world becoming more interconnected daily.

French is an official world language used in various fields, such as art, nature, science, and diplomacy. Therefore, learning French is about communication skills, broadening perspectives and enriching our understanding of global cultures.

Motivation for Students

Through this article, I want to encourage students to see the French language as a gateway to a broader world. Learning a foreign language  may seem challenging at first. Still, with perseverance and consistency, you will realize that this skill can lead to many exciting opportunities—whether pursuing education abroad, working in multinational companies, or simply forming friendships with people from around the globe.

As a foreign language, French requires effort to learn, but the rewards are immense. So, don’t be afraid to try! Start with simple steps like listening to French songs, watching French movies, or taking language courses. With determination and motivation, you can master it.
